Praxis – Theory and Practise Combined

Paulo Freire was a curriculum theorist who believed that education should lead to the empowerment of students but that we need to see how learning is applied to human experience. Therefore, this page is about listening, viewing and reading ideas that may be of interest and applying them to social studies learning.

PBS

PBS is a great source for current and historical materials. Covers a lot of curricular material outside of social studies as well.

Known for the site that helped many for mathematics, it also offers help in social studies in history and economics.

NFB

The National Film Board of Canada offers movies that are pertinent to social studies but general knowledge and entertainment as well.

Others

I am a fan of listening to radio programs. You can maximize a busy schedule by downloading a podcast or listening live to a favorite news program. The CBC is one of my favorite as it still belongs to us (sorta) and the programming is awesome. Sunday Edition/Ideas are two of my favorite programs.

Some great information for students or anyone who is interested in the work that is done by Doctors without Boarders

After one of the most powerful lectures I’ve ever experienced by Dr. Samantha Nutt, I’ve been hooked to the cause ever since. Like the Doctors without Boarders there are many sources to explore and think about.

We don’t take the time to understand our history. Yet, is through looking back that we acquire the knowledge to look ahead.

This is one fantastic site with visual and textual information on social change I will be looking deeper and deeper into this site but it looks fantastic!

This site if full of information on defending Human Rights and features many experts in this area sharing their observations.

One of my favorite go to sites for comic relief as well as political thought. Some may ask why an American site? We know what happens down south affects what happens up here. Or as a previous PM put it, “

Steven Colbert opening dialogue always has some interesting political satire which makes a point. Agree or disagree, fun stuff to invoke thought.
